Where are all my millenial grannies at? ๐โโ๏ธ If you're here, you're probably one of em. That's good, because me too! Granny core is a trend that I hope sticks around, and here's why...
Here's what it looks like: brassy fixtures, eclectic patterns, antiques and vintage and wood grain. But to me, it's much more than an aesthetic! People who embrace all parts of the trend are finding that life feels a bit lighter, a bit rosier, a bit healthier.
Grandma Core calls to people who want a simpler, slower-paced way of life. It encourages women to draw upon the intrinsic, feminine strengths and learn skills long forgotten. It emphasizes warmth, nostalgia, the feeling of being 'well loved', both in your homes and relationships.
I didn't know what grandma core / granny core was until recently, but I in my heart, I was already yearning for a slow, intentional life. There are a few reasons I think this is happening. Many of which I talk about in my book. Here are a few,
Healing from loss. We're grieving, it's that simple. The pandemic took many of our old people away from us, and we're trying to process in a world without them. Reminders of them help, in the form of traditional family recipes, pictures of them, connecting with relatives and friends.
Sick of hustle culture & consumerism. The world's scary so we retreat into what's familiar, warm, comfortable, safe. Hobbies that keep our hands busy, books that keep our minds occupied, projects that keep us focused and tired. We're reconditioning our brains to create instead of consume, and it gives us purpose. It's a healthier way to cope than binging or other quick pleasures, and can help us work through and digest the stress that's already in our body.
Craving the whimsy and rosy view grandparents have in abundance. There's something so compelling about the creamy vintage and rosy tones that filter the old photos of our grandparents. No just their photos, but their view of life. Stable and self-assured and hopeful. What it must be like, to walk through life without that unsettling fear of rejection that most of us shoulder. To know that when life gets hard, you can bake some bread or plant some seeds, and you'll get through it. Imagine...
I wrote a whole book is about this. Because we, as gen x, millenial or gen-z peoples, want this.
Here's an excerpt from In My Grandma Era,
Millennial grandmas are trending on my explore page every day.
Do you see it too?
I see it in the first-generation garden girlies out here digging up worms and doing rain dances.
I see it in the (helpful) reminders from sourdough gurus to โget off your instagram and feed your starterโ.
I see it in influencers who randomly decide one day to pick up a crochet needle. And then master the art within months: creating hats, scarves, animals, sweaters and more (elise is queen).
I see it in the high profile celebrities who are moving onto farms and growing their food.
I see it in my friends who host tea parties to discuss books; harvest parties to swap seeds, fruits, and recipes; and craft nights to try a new skill!
The grandma lifestyle is trending, and there are so many reasons for it. Whatโs yours?
